Real Electronic Parts
Electronic Snap Circuits includes real circuit components just like the circuit boards inside radios, televisions, computers, and other electronic devices. This set makes it easy for anyone to create simple electronic circuits and devices. To operate, you simply snap the electronic elements onto a plastic grid, and then connect them together with wire pieces that snap easily into place.

The SC-300 lets you build electronic devices such as a whistle chip, speaker, alarm circuit, LED, lamp socket, fan motor, and a speaker. Additional pieces can be purchased separately, or in different models, and they can all be used together to create larger and more elaborate projects.

Making Electronics Fun and Easy
The included instruction manual offers 305 projects ranging from a simple light switch to a noise-activated burglar alarm. We found the color-coded instruction manual clear and easy to understand, and we had no problems creating any of the projects we tried. The projects are organized by levels of difficulty, and each project teaches an objective such as "To show how electricity can only pass in one direction through an LED."

We definitely experienced a sense of satisfaction as we completed each project, and we definitely learned about electronics concepts. The manufacturer recommends the set for ages 8-108; younger engineers should be able to easily follow the diagrams for each project, but will probably require their parents to help explain how everything works. So a word of warning to parents: Brush up on your high school physics! Although the instruction offers some good information, we found that we still needed to brush up on the physics we learned years ago so we could understand concepts such as the difference between a circuit in parallel and in series.

Unique Learning Experience
Creating a flying UFO from "scratch" with rudimentary electronic pieces was highly satisfying to us, and we think Electronic Snap Circuits may well help young students gain and foster an appreciation for, and interest in, how electronics work and are built.

For students who are already learning about electronics in school, this set creates a hands-on experience that makes for more fun than reading about how these things work in a textbook. So don't be surprised if report cards come back with higher grades after playing with this toy.

Parent-Child Bonding Experience
The Elenco Electronic Snap Circuits would make a great parent-child bonding experience that is both educational and fun. As you work through each project with your child, don't be surprised when you, too, are learning something new and interesting. And after you've completed all the projects, you can create your own! The combinations are limitless!

What's in the Box
Plastic "circuit board," over 60 pieces including wire, resistors, speaker, battery holder, motor fan, red led, and lamp module.

5 out of 5 stars Great & Fun Learning Toy   January 2, 2009
Joy D (Sugar Hill, GA USA)
So awesome! I gave this to my 10 yr old son for Christmas and his 9 yr old brother was the first to start playing with it. They've since made all kinds of cool things. I think this is one of the best gifts I've ever given. It's fun AND they learn some important concepts. It comes with easy to understand instruction books for creating different projects. Additionally, each project explains a little about what electronic circuit concepts you are actually learning/performing. So cool! Beating out our Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Wii and PCs for a while, the boys played with this for hours at a time. That's a hit!

This is a durable toy and easy for your children to understand. My 9 year old son took it out of the box and built a radio all by himself with in 15 minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Fast and Easy through Amazon   December 29, 2008

I bought this for my 8 year old nephew for Christmas. While I can not comment on the toy itself, the delivery was very fast. And, I found that Amazon had the best pricing plus free shipping.

4 out of 5 stars Fun, but ran into a few problems   December 29, 2008
R. Johns (Monterey, CA)
I bought this toy for xmas for my 8 year old daughter, so that I could teach her a little bit about electricity. I have a fairly strong background in physics and electrical engineering, so I thought it would be a fun xmas gift that we could both enjoy.

The overall layout of the kit is very nice. It's very much like a big lego version of a typical bread board that is used to lay out electrical projects. The parts snap together nicely and the kit includes a clear peg board panel which is handy (but not required) for laying out projects. The instruction book includes many different projects that can be created using the pieces in the kit. However, it should be noted that many of the projects are slight variations from one another. For example, one project might be a tone generator, then the next few projects will just be changing capacitors in order to increase or decrease the tone frequency. Nevertheless, this still teaches you about how different items can affect the overall circuit/project.

Overall, I think some of the projects are a little beyond younger children. Hooking up a motor or light is fun, but suddenly jumping into a tone generator or full AM radio is a big leap for most people - let alone most kids. Even so, the kit has a lot of value and the projects are doable with some adult help. Following the diagrams can be a little tricky at times - due to how the items must stack on top of each other - but once you get the hang of it, it's not too bad.

On our particular kit, several of the components were defective and/or broke while being used. I actually ended up having to drag my oscilloscope out of the closet to verify that in fact some of the items had internal shorts (probably from poor wiring). The manual says to contact the company for replacement items (which I have done) and now I'm waiting to see if they take care of the replacement (I'll follow up later with a further update on whether or not they come through). Additionally, one of the small light bulbs broke away from the base, so it's probably not a good idea if kids too young use this kit without some supervision.

Due to the couple of defective (and suspected defective) parts, we were unable to get the AM Radio projects to function correctly. However, assuming things work okay, there are several nice Radio projects (complete with volume control and tuning) which look to be pretty fun. There are also a couple of fun components that respond to sound and light and these allow you to change tones based on light (such as moving your hand or dimming the lights in the room). The kit also includes two 3V battery packs (you have to supply the AA batteries of course). This is nice because it allows you to supply power in series or parallel (3V or 6V). There are also a couple of switches. Perhaps one of the most fun items in the kit is the flying fan. My daughter played with that silly thing for about two hours! Basically, it's a small motor and you set a small fan on the shaft. Once it gets up to speed, then you kill the power and the fan takes off like a helicopter. If you power it with 3 volts, it goes up about 3 feet high. If you power it with 6 volts, it really takes off like a rocket. There are also several LED lights.

The items in the kit are clearly marked and help ease you into learning how to read a schematic to a certain degree. The construction of everything seems pretty good.

Overall, this is a pretty good kit. However, I think it might be more fun for kids if there were a few more simple items to play around with and not as many IC's or transistors. Additionally, some parts sort of take the form of "black boxes"; these parts may be required to produce some of the projects in the kit, but it's a little more difficult for kids to really understand what function they are providing. Even so, I still can recommend the kit. It's a lot of fun and assuming the company stands behind the broken items in our kit, then I think it's worth the money and will provide quite a bit of entertainment (and educational) value to kids. My daughter already seems to grasp some of the basic concepts pretty well, although I have to keep an eye on her so she doesn't accidentally create a direct short with the batteries and burn the house down or something :-)

5 out of 5 stars Not Just for Boys!   December 29, 2008
Harried Screenwriter (Studio City, CA USA)
I have an 8 year old daughter. This Christmas she wanted stuffed animals, Build-A-Bear, Webkinz and so on. We got her that stuff (and a giant pile of books) but I couldn't resist getting this for her, in hopes of encouraging her interest in science and technology. When it arrived I was a little concerned, the back cover has a big picture of a BOY playing with the set... No girls in sight. I was prepared for disappointment when she opened the set but she just said NEAT! And, I have to tell you, she has spent more time with the projects in this kit than ANY of her other Christmas gifts. I worked with her on the first two projects and then away she went, working her way excitedly thorough the experiments. Lights flash, wheels whiz, flying widgets soar... and my daughter is thrilled.

As I write this, she's having a play date with another little girl and the two of them are building, building, building...

Long story short -- GO FOR IT.
